We've just returned from our very first home education community cruise, and it's safe to say—it was something really special.

On 9th May, seven home educating families (plus grandparents and friends) set sail from Southampton aboard MSC Virtuosa for a 7-night cruise to Norway. Our itinerary included Edinburgh (via South Queensferry), Stavanger, Haugesund, and Kristiansand—but the destinations turned out to be just one part of the experience.

Why We Organized a Home Education Group Cruise

As a home educating family and a cruise specialist, this trip brought together two things we truly love: travel and community. The idea was simple:

  • Bring like-minded families together
  • Create space for genuine connection
  • Offer total flexibility (no rigid schedules, no pressure)

Families could join group activities, shore excursions, or meals—or do their own thing entirely and reconnect later. That freedom became one of the biggest strengths of the trip.

The Magic of the Cruise Community

Many of my cruise clients tell me that one of their favorite parts of a voyage is meeting other travelers on board. Cruisers just tend to be happy-go-lucky, easy-going people who are full of interesting life stories.

On this trip, that sentiment felt amplified. We all came from completely different backgrounds, yet through the cruise, we truly had each other. Whether we were catching the evening theatre shows together, grabbing late-night pizza, watching the kids play, or cheering each other on at karaoke, there was a beautiful sense of shared joy. We were all just there for it, building a micro-community at sea.

The Biggest Win: Independence for the Kids

If there's one thing that stood out above everything else on this family cruise, it was this: The children were given a level of independence they rarely get at home.

In today's world, it's not always possible to let children roam freely. But on a ship like MSC Virtuosa, within a safe and contained environment, they could:

  • Meet up with friends independently
  • Go to the pool or the kids' clubs together
  • Explore the ship's safe spaces
  • Arrange their own times to meet for dinner

The transformation was incredible. Confidence grew daily, and friendships formed naturally. By the end of the cruise, many of the children were exchanging details to stay in touch—and none of them wanted to leave.

One child summed it up perfectly: "This is the best holiday ever." Another simply said they were "living their best life."

A Much-Needed Break for Home Ed Parents

While the children gained independence, the parents gained something just as valuable: time. Time to have uninterrupted conversations, relax properly, and connect with other home educating parents who truly "get it." Because there was no pressure to follow a set plan, the whole experience felt genuinely restorative.

Is a Cruise "Educational"?

It depends on how you define education. Yes, we visited a country rich in Viking history, and there were endless opportunities for cultural exploration at each port. But the most meaningful learning we saw wasn't academic. It was:

  • Social confidence and communication
  • Navigational skills and independence
  • Emotional development and teamwork

This wasn't classroom learning—it was real-world life learning, and it was incredibly valuable.

An Honest MSC Virtuosa & Norway Itinerary Review

In the spirit of keeping this review balanced and fair, there were a couple of challenges on this specific itinerary that are worth noting.

1. The Edinburgh Tender Process (and a Lesson in Flexibility)

Our stop at Edinburgh (South Queensferry) was unfortunately quite chaotic. A ship-wide medical emergency understandably caused initial delays, but the tender boat system became disorganized. Some families struggled to get ashore.

However, this actually turned into a massive win for one of our families! Realizing the queues were long, and traveling with both younger children and senior parents, they made the executive decision to skip the port and stay on board. They ended up having pretty much the whole ship to themselves, enjoying the pools, lounges, and facilities without the usual crowds.

It's a great reminder that not every port needs to be visited. The ship is a massive destination in itself, and taking advantage of a semi-empty ship on a port day is a fantastic way to relax. In cruise travel, sometimes the best call is just going with the flow.

2. The Norwegian Fjords Itinerary Misconception

Although this trip was marketed as a Norwegian fjords cruise, it's important to know that MSC Virtuosa itself does not sail deep into the dramatic, narrow fjords on this route.

We were lucky to book a separate boat excursion in Stavanger that took us on a smaller vessel right into the heart of the scenery, allowing us to see beautiful waterfalls and gaze up at the iconic Pulpit Rock towering above the water.

However, families who stayed in the city center or didn't book a specific tour missed out on those iconic fjord landscapes entirely. If you are planning this itinerary and want to experience the classic landscapes, I highly recommend securing an independent boat trip—the exact route we took was a Stavanger fjord cruise to Lysefjord and Pulpit Rock. Keep this in mind when planning your budget for a cruise to Norway!

🏔️ Stavanger: Old Town & Fjord Adventures

Stavanger was easily our favorite port of the cruise! It's the perfect place where colorful harbour streets meet wild Nordic adventure.

Spend your morning wandering through the postcard-perfect white wooden houses of the Old Town (Gamle Stavanger), strolling along the buzzing harbour, and soaking in the calm coastal charm. Norway is the land of trolls, and you can truly feel those ancient stories living within the surrounding mountains and forests.

Just beyond the city lies one of the most iconic views in the entire world: Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock), towering majestically over the breathtaking Lysefjord.

👉 How to explore: From scenic, relaxing fjord cruises to high-speed, adrenaline-pumping RIB boat tours, there is an adventure for everyone. Check out the best Stavanger Fjord Cruises & Excursions here.

🚌 Haugesund: Don't Make This Cruise Mistake!

Learn from our regret: DON'T wait too long to head out exploring. We delayed hopping on the bus and completely ran out of time before the 17:30 "all aboard" whistle blew!

If you are docking in Haugesund, trust me on this: Get on the Hop-On Hop-Off bus FIRST. The bus stops right outside the cruise terminal (you literally can't miss it), features 11 convenient stops, includes an audio guide, and offers free onboard WiFi. Booking ahead ensures you don't waste precious time in port.

Must-Do Haugesund Stops:

  • Stop 4 – Visnes Mining Museum: Discover the fascinating history behind the copper used to build the Statue of Liberty, surrounded by unique coastal landscapes.
  • Stop 5 – Avaldsnes Viking Village: Walk through reconstructed Viking homes set against stunning scenery. (Tip: Allow at least 2 hours here!)
  • Stop 9 – Haraldshaugen National Monument: A deeply historic national monument. It's a scenic 15–20 minute walk from the stop—perfect for catching the rising tide.

👉 Save your seat: Avoid the queues at the pier and book your Haugesund Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour tickets here.

⚛ Kristiansand: A Relaxed & Walkable Port Day

We hit the worst weather of our trip here—it was pouring rain and most things were closed except for a few local shops. However, Kristiansand still completely won us over! It is a wonderfully relaxed port day because almost every major sight is completely walkable directly from the cruise terminal.

The Perfect Rainy Day (or Sunny Day) Itinerary:

  • Fiskebrygga Harbour: This lively fish market area has a fantastic local atmosphere and incredible fresh seafood to warm you up.
  • Posebyen Old Town: A charming quarter made up of historic, beautiful white wooden houses.
  • Odderøya Coastal Walk: A gorgeous, flexible walk offering panoramic views across the archipelago.

👉 Want to get out on the water? If the weather behaves, you can elevate your day with an archipelago boat tour or a thrilling RIB speed boat adventure. Browse all Kristiansand Activities & Tours here.

MSC Virtuosa Review: Our Second Sailing

This was my second time on MSC Virtuosa, and the experience was noticeably improved compared to my last sailing.

What was better: More consistent service, better food quality overall, and excellent individual staff (our main dining room waiter was amazing).

The Verdict: MSC Cruises offers fantastic value for money and is an ideal entry-level cruise line for families. However, service can still vary.

If you're looking for a more premium, seamless experience, I highly recommend upgrading to the premium "ship-within-a-ship" concept. You can read my full, firsthand guide on whether it's worth it here: My Personal Experience in the MSC Yacht Club.
